Review Methodology

Aifreands ranks AI companion and AI girlfriend apps using structured evaluation criteria based on usability, realism, customization depth, pricing transparency, and moderation clarity.

Rankings are updated periodically as platforms evolve.

Our Evaluation Framework

Each AI companion platform is evaluated using predefined criteria designed to measure practical usability rather than marketing claims. Scores are assigned based on observable feature behavior and subscription transparency.

Core Ranking Criteria

Category Weight What it measures
Chat Experience Equal (1 of 6) Coherence, staying in character, and whether memory survives both a long conversation and a return visit the next day
Customization Equal (1 of 6) Depth of the character creator, and whether creating or activating a character costs extra credits
NSFW & Roleplay Equal (1 of 6) What the app actually permits versus what it advertises, and where the moderation boundary really sits
Media Capabilities Equal (1 of 6) Image, voice and video quality, whether those features complete without errors, and how much media the plan actually includes
Pricing & Value Equal (1 of 6) Real cost per action, the renewal price versus the advertised one, refund terms, and how hard the app makes it to cancel
Character Diversity Equal (1 of 6) Size and range of the character catalogue, and variety of archetypes and art styles

How Scores Are Assigned

Each category is rated on a 5-point scale. The six category scores are averaged and doubled to produce the overall score out of 10 shown on rankings and comparison pages. Categories carry equal weight, which means you can check our arithmetic on any review: add the six category scores, divide by six, multiply by two, and you get the headline number.

📝 Important Clarification

Scores reflect structured editorial evaluation rather than user voting or promotional placement.

📊 August 2026: why every score changed

In August 2026 we re-scored the entire catalogue after buying paid accounts on twelve apps and testing them hands-on. Every score moved, and every one moved down. That is not a change of opinion about the products, it is a change in what we measure.

The earlier scores rewarded features: how many characters, how deep the creator, whether voice and video existed. The retest added three things we had never measured directly, because measuring them requires paying:

  • What the renewal actually costs. Several apps advertise one price and recur at another. That figure only appears on a paying account.
  • How much media the subscription really buys. Once token costs are converted into images per month, the same money buys 8 images on one app and 333 on another.
  • How hard it is to leave. Cancellation runs from two clicks to ten, and on some apps accepting a retention bonus blocks cancellation for thirty days.

Those three factors sit inside Pricing & Value and Media Capabilities, which is where most of the movement happened. Apps that were rated on features alone scored well; apps rated on what happens to your money and your ability to leave score differently.

The correction runs in both directions. On several apps we had published token costs that were up to five times higher than the live rates, which made those apps look more expensive than they are. Those figures were corrected downward, in the apps’ favour, at the same time.

Where our evidence is thinnest is Character Diversity, because catalogue breadth is the hardest thing to capture in a single test session. We are collecting that evidence now and will say so plainly if it changes any score.

Ranking Updates

AI companion platforms change frequently. Rankings may shift if:
